August meeting (copy 01)

Dear DWC members and friends

Hello ,

August is busy and so is our political need.

Let us begin our updates with our sincerest heartfelt wishes to California Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez and her family. She is one of the bravest leaders we know, and our whole community and beyond stand with her.

Endorsement Agenda ItemMeeting on Monday, August 16: 6:30 PMPLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE NOTICE AS IT CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE AUGUST 16, DWC-SD GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING. As per the notice you received on August 1, 2021, the DWC-SD plans to attempt to endorse in the La Mesa City Council Special Election race at our meeting on Monday, August 16, 2021. Please use this link to register to attend the meeting. https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEtc-ygpz0jGtHiUwK25Bq90NTh1n123NTD Reminder:  Per the Club’s revised by-laws passed at the February 2021 meeting: “A member in good standing who has attended at least two (2) prior meetings in the previous twelve (12) months and, for new members, has paid dues at least forty-five (45) days prior to the meeting shall be eligible to vote for Club Officer elections and Club endorsements.” Only those members who meet the above voting eligibility requirements will receive an email from the Democratic Woman’s Club Endorsement Committee this coming Thursday, August 12, titled Your August 16 DWCSD Endorsement Ballot is HEREPlease be sure to open and read that email, as it contains all the information you need to participate in our attempt to endorse in the La Mesa City Council Special Election that will be on the regular DWC-SD Meeting Agenda for Monday, August 16. If you do not see it in your inbox, please check your spam/junk mail folder. The email also contains the Zoom link to register for the meeting, a link to view the candidate questionnaires, and a personalized secure link to your voting ballot. For those of you eligible to vote who have multiple DWC-SD members in your family, but use only one email address, we will send separate emails for each eligible club member in your family. These are not duplicate emails. Each one should be addressed to only one of you. Since each ballot is personalized and secure, each member needs to receive their own email to be able to vote. So if your family falls in this category, please be sure to look for separate emails for each of the DWC-SD members in your family and ensure each of you vote using the links in the email addressed to you. This is our first endorsement attempt in the 2021 – 2022 Election Cycle. We will attempt to endorse in the following race:

  • La Mesa City Council Special Election:

    • Mejgan Afshan

    • Patricia Dillard

    • Michelle Louden

Because there are more than two candidates running, we will use our Ranked Choice voting process to determine if any candidate meets the 60% vote threshold required to receive the Club’s endorsement. “No Endorsement” will always be an option and the number of votes for No Endorsement will be included when determining the Club’s position on this race. If you are a member in good standing, but not eligible to vote, and would like to review the candidate questionnaires, please contact me and I will provide a link for you to access. Please do noy share outside the club.   It is our plan to review the Ranked Choice Process at the meeting on Monday. Please contact me if you have further questions. Regards,Yvonne Elkin (she, her, hers) DWCSD Endorsement Committee[email protected]858-752-4368

Our meetings are also available live on our YouTube channel. Someone will monitor the chat to text into the meeting relevant questions or comments that may be asked there. Don't forget that the recall vote is quickly approaching. On September 14th the State of California will answer two questions on the ballot, but only one will be needed to stop the recall. Because the ballot can seem confusing to the average voter the San Diego Democratic Party is amping up its effort to get out the "just vote NO" word. Tuesday, August 10th, at 7 pm, the SDC Dem Party, led by Chair Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, will hold a special meeting to organize the counter recall efforts. Register here to join the efforts. U.S. Congressmember Sara Jacobs will also be joining the fray with her own phone banking efforts. All are invited to join in this Wednesday the 11th from 5-7pm. You can join her efforts here. Last but not least the DWC would like to commend the San Diego Democratic Party Administration on the success of the Roosevelt Dinner. Several DWC members gathered the night of and watched the amazing speeches and awards handed out to the stand-out leaders of our party.

As always, if any member has questions or concerns, please feel free to call me. I look forward to 'seeing you' on Monday.
