August meeting

Dear DWC members and friends

Hello ,

August is busy and so is our political need.

Let us begin our updates with our sincerest heartfelt wishes to California Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez and her family. She is one of the bravest leaders we know, and our whole community and beyond stand with her.

Our August DWCSD Meeting will be held Monday, the 16th at 6:30 PM where we will attempt to endorse in the La Mesa City Council Special Election race scheduled for this November.

There are three Democratic candidates running:

  • Mejgan Afshan

  • Patricia Dillard

  • Michelle Louden

Reminder! Per the Club’s revised by-laws passed at the February 2021 meeting: “A member in good standing who has attended at least two (2) prior meetings in the previous twelve (12) months and, for new members, has paid dues at least forty-five (45) days prior to the meeting shall be eligible to vote for Club Officer elections and Club endorsements.”

Because there are more than two candidates we anticipate that we will use our Ranked Choice voting process for this effort. As we did last year, we will be using an online voting tool to capture and calculate the vote and that link will only be sent to members eligible to vote. Please watch for an email with more detail about a week before the meeting. That email will provide more detail and instructions, as well as the Zoom meeting link and a link to the candidate questionnaires.

Regards,

Yvonne Elkin

Our meetings are also available live on our YouTube channel. Someone will monitor the chat to text into the meeting relevant questions or comments that may be asked there. Don't forget that the recall vote is quickly approaching. On September 14th the State of California will answer two questions on the ballot, but only one will be needed to stop the recall. Because the ballot can seem confusing to the average voter the San Diego Democratic Party is amping up its effort to get out the "just vote NO" word. Tuesday, August 10th, at 7 pm, the SDC Dem Party, led by Chair Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, will hold a special meeting to organize the counter recall efforts. Register here to join the efforts. U.S. Congressmember Sara Jacobs will also be joining the fray with her own phone banking efforts. All are invited to join in this Wednesday the 11th from 5-7pm. You can join her efforts here. Last but not least the DWC would like to commend the San Diego Democratic Party Administration on the success of the Roosevelt Dinner. Several DWC members gathered the night of and watched the amazing speeches and awards handed out to the stand-out leaders of our party.

As always, if any member has questions or concerns, please feel free to call me. I look forward to 'seeing you' on Monday.
