Apr 15 – My Journey by Andrea
Clubmember Dr. Andrea Cubitt,, will present to us the story of her transgender journey. A scientist, she did her postdoctoral training at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, and at the University of California San Diego, where she was part of team that initiated development of the green fluorescent protein (“GFP”) with Roger Tsien, Ph.D.
Dr. Cubitt holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Sheffield and a first class honors degree (B.Sc) in medical biochemistry from the University of Birmingham in the UK. Dr. Cubitt is a co-inventor or co-author of 18 issued US patents and 20 publications.
Deja Cabrera, Transgender Services Coordinator at the LGBTQ Center, will also be available to answer questions and give additional information.
This is critically relevant as our President’s transgender ban in the US military has been upheld in Federal Court and went into effect last Friday. And there has been much ongoing public discussion on the impact on women’s sports, etc.
San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott will address the club briefly.
New Business – Two weeks ago, we sent out notice to members that we will voting on the request from several club members, including Alyce Pipkin-Allen, in addition to Indivisible leader and AAPI Democratic Club President Jean-Huy Tran, that we consider the following for support/opposition at our meeting tomorrow.
Please come prepared to vote on these issues:
Support AB392 –Peace officers: deadly force.– Introduced by Weber & McCarty
This bill is to raise the minimum standard requirement that allows police officers to use deadly force on civilian from “reasonable” to “necessary”. This law has not changed since 1872. If passed, the police officer will be required to exhaust all alternative tactics including de-escalation first.
Oppose SB230– Law enforcement: use of deadly force: training: policies– Introduced by Caballero
This bill requires POST to develop training. However, this training only includes “adequate consideration” of a list of subjects but without any specificity as to what that training should look like. In addition, this bill does not require that any officer actually go through the training.

Support ACA6– Elections: disqualification of electors– Introduced by McCarty, Bonta, Gonzalez, Kalra, Kamlager-Dove & Weber
This bill is to restore the voting right of felons who have completed their sentence & are currently on parole.

Support AB1076 – Criminal records: automatic relief – Introduced by Ting
This bill is to eliminate the complicated court process of expunging arrest & conviction records & make it automatic. This law will only apply to cases that are already eligible to be expunged.
